Addressing Ohio’s Suicide Crisis Among Men in the Workforce
The Context: In Ohio, approximately five individuals die by suicide every single day. White non-Hispanic males are at the highest risk, being four times more likely to die by suicide than women.
Warning Signs in the Workplace:
- Withdrawing from family, friends, and co-workers.
- Giving away valued items or sharing unusual goodbye messages.
- Taking dangerous or reckless risks.
- Extreme mood swings and significant changes in appetite or sleep.
- Increased use of alcohol and/or drugs.
Immediate Interventions for Managers:
- Remove Access: If a crisis is imminent, help remove access to weapons or items that could be used for self-harm.
- Direct Dialogue: Directly discuss your concerns regarding changes in their behavior.
- Safety Support: Stay with the individual until a safety plan is achieved or visit the nearest emergency department for evaluation.
- Logistical Help: Offer to help watch their children or pets while they seek professional help.
